01. my characterisation is based on howl's moving castle (movie) and the howl series (books). i take a bit more of his personality from the books, and most of my interpretation adheres to the books, but you will also be seeing movie representation up the wazoo & my own spice. read more about my thoughts here.02. full disclosure: i, like most other, did begin with the movies as my introduction to the character. i understand most people are only familiar with the movie. this is fine, as i personally believe it to be a fair representation of howl on the surface level. i would be happy to explain more of his character in depth; all you need do is ask !triggering content.

public knowledge.01. he is an extremely powerful wizard, capable of formidable spells which he uses to help out the general public. however, most people believe he has bad intentions.02. it is rumoured that he collects paramours & sucks the souls from them. another version of this rumour is that he eats their hearts, or that he collects their hearts & keeps them in his castle.03. his castle roams through the hills of ingary, though where it is at any given time is unknown & blocked by powerful magic. occasionally, it may be spotted be an eagle-eyed onlooker.04. it is rumoured that howl is heartless, both figuratively & literally. this rumour has also branched into whispers that he is a literal monster in a human disguise.05. he is extremely ostentatious & vain, caring for his looks beyond any regular person. he can often be identified by sound before sight : his jewelry can often be heard jingling about.06. he often undercharges the poor when they don't have the means to pay for his spells. for good measure, he also overcharges the rich.

private knowledge.01. he swallowed a star named calcifer when he was a young boy, & this is causing him to slowly lose his humanity each passing day. if calcifer goes out, he will die.02. without his heart, he can't be away from calcifer for long ; he can only leave his castle (or wherever calcifer is homed) for up to one week. any longer & he will fall ill.03. howl is the one spreading rumours about himself. they've spread beyond his realm however & he might be disappointed but not surprised by some of the worser ones.04. after courting & jilting the witch of the waste, he is cursed to return to her when he is 10,000 days (~27 years) old, if he does not have his heart back by then. he & calcifer are not allowed to talk about this under any circumstances.05. as with many of the king's wizards, at the age of 25, howl is cursed into a harpy to aid with the war efforts. this affliction is irreversible to howl, and shows itself whenever he fights in the war or uses his magic in a way intended to cause physical / mental harm to others.

main.01. childhood/adolescence.
in which a prodigy is born. he is born howell jenkins to an ordinary mother and father in wales. his natural gift in magic leads him to begin exploring this newfound ability. his magic remains young & difficult to tame. in school, he plays on rugby teams as their star wing, and focuses on english as his favourite class.02. young adulthood (pre-curse).
he hates being pinned down to anything. howl eventually attends university & joins a fraternity of wizards. in an attempt to escape the brothers of a woman he jilts, he creates a portal to ingary, a magical land, where he begins training under madame pentstemmon, becoming her final & star pupil. he later on takes the name howl jenkins pendragon. it is when he is twenty-one that he stumbles upon a star shower, catching the star named calcifer & offering him new life, in exchange for boosted magic.03. young adulthood (post-curse).
i shall never be able to love anyone properly. the wizard howl spends his time courting paramours & later jilting them, which amasses him quite a reputation. quite later on, he takes a courtly & aesthetic adoration to the witch of the waste, whom he soon realises is not as beautiful as she appears and jilts. the witch puts a curse on him : on his 10,000th day, he will return to her.04. howl's moving castle. default.
a fickle heart is the only constant in this world. he lives now in his moving castle, as secluded from the world as he can be. he allows heartless rumours of himself to spread & prefers to show his face only during his most playful of moods. the weight of the harpy curse exhausts him endlessly, as do merciless wings that sprout from his skin & scar his perfection.05. post-howl's moving castle.
i feel like there's a weight on my chest. howl has found his heart, by whatever means, now travelling with calcifer in his flying castle ; great power comes from the wizard & fallen star joined together, after all.
